Athlete's Foot

It lurks in all places where people go barefoot: athlete's foot is an unsightly infection that requires immediate treatment, since it is highly contagious and often leads to secondary complications.

Statistically speaking, roughly a quarter of all people in England occasionally suffer from athlete's foot. Athlete's foot is an extremely uncomfortable fungal infection (Latin name: Tineapedis) that primarily affects the areas between the toes, as well as the soles of the feet. The infection is caused by filamentous fungi that settle in the spaces between the toes, resulting in redness, dampness, blistering and itching.

Athlete's foot lurks in all places where people go barefoot

Technically speaking, athlete's foot is not dangerous to human health. When left untreated, though, it can weaken the natural defenses of the skin to such an extent that the likelihood of contracting a streptococcal infection such as erysipelas is greatly increased. Erysipelas is a serious skin infection that can be accompanied by a high fever, and which requires inpatient treatment. Athlete's foot also promotes the development of toenail fungus if there are tears or other openings on the toenails.

Since skin continually renews itself, everyone is constantly shedding tiny bits of skin. Because of this, you can contract athlete's foot wherever people go barefoot, such as in a sauna, swimming pool, or changing room. If healthy feet come into contact with skin particles infected with athlete's foot, they may contract the infection. sweaty feet as well as too-tight or poorly-ventilated shoes and hosiery also encourage the development of athlete's foot. Diabetics and those with foot conditions carry a particularly high risk of infection because the spaces between their toes are especially narrow, creating precisely the kind of warm, moist atmosphere in which athlete's foot thrives.

You can reduce the risk of contracting athlete's foot by wearing flip-flops to the high-risk locations mentioned above. You should also take care to keep the spaces between your toes dry. A further preventative step would be wearing high-quality Goodyear-welted shoes on an everyday basis. Made entirely from leather, these allow feet to properly breathe, prevent the development of foot perspiration, and support foot health with a perfect fit. Too-tight shoes, on the other hand, can increase the risk of athlete's foot, since they cause wounds to form on the feet—ideal points of entry for filamentous fungi.
