Monkstrap: Women's Buckle Shoes

Classic leather shoes in the Derby cut with one or two buckles are also called monkstraps, or simply: monks. The monk is often described as a mix between the elegant Oxford and casual Derby. Its slim shape gives the "monk" its elegance, while the specific buckles give it its original look. Instead of laces, the monkstrap has one or two buckles (double monkstraps).

Otherwise, the Monk is a low-sitting oxford shoe with a shaft made of three leather pieces. To provide maximum comfort to the wearer, the classic Monk is equipped with a wide, soft tongue that provides support to the ankle. Originally a buckle shoe from men's fashion, it is now also worn by women.

Not only does James Bond love Monkstraps

The monk strap is currently more popular than ever and is experiencing a fashionable mega-revival. Not only because Daniel Craig, aka Mr. Bond, James Bond, has been saving the world in monk straps (of course from Tom Ford) for years. But also because the classic is super chic and stylish, and has therefore also made its way into women's fashion.

He looks just as good with a pantsuit as he does with (skinny) jeans or dress pants. The buckle - whether square, round, in a single or double design - is a subtle yet stylish eye-catcher and gives the shoe its special touch.

The History of the Monkstrap

The Monkstrap is said to originate from the 15th century and was first worn by alpine monks. For their daily work outdoors, they needed sturdy footwear in addition to the open sandals they wore in the summer. An Englishman is said to have taken some models home to the island, where it received its current name. Monks later found their way onto the cobbled streets of the world.

Buckle closure leather shoes became increasingly popular in the 20th century, before being briefly replaced by lace-up shoes. Until today! The monk shoe now represents effortless elegance and a stylish statement on the foot.

How Women Can Properly Combine the Monkstrap

Without a doubt, the monk is one of the trendiest shoes in men's fashion. But even among women, the classic is becoming increasingly popular, although it is not quite as easy to style since the monk is still considered a more masculine shoe.

Monks always look strong with a suit, feminine accessories or an extravagant nerd glasses add a feminine touch to the strict business look.

Monkstraps are suitable as a casual shoe for women to a certain extent. However, when paired with a slim-fitting skinny jeans and blouse or t-shirt, you can tone down the bold look and rock the moon as a statement accessory in your everyday life.

Only with a dress or with a skirt do the masculine buckle shoes not fit. Here, women's boots or women's sneakers fit much better.
